Following the 34^th Annual Training Institute on Behavioral Health and Addictive Disorders (Feb 11–14, 2013 Clearwater Beach, Florida), a busy spring conference season gets underway with two annual events in Las Vegas, and a first-time conference in Brooklyn, New York.

COUNSELING ADVANCES    

The theme of the 4^th National Counseling Advances Conference (March 13–15, 2013 in Las Vegas), is “Impact of Trauma, Addiction and Attachment on the Self and the Family”. The conference offers up to 24 hours for continuing education which includes 6 hours for a pre-conference workshop (March 12) on Ethics facilitated by Pamela Harmell, PhD. A conference highlight is a luncheon sponsored by the Betty Ford Center which will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the National Association for Children of Alcoholics. Several founders of NACoA will be on hand to hear a special presentation by Jerry Moe, Director of Childrens Programs for the Betty Ford Center.

SEX  & LOVE ADDICTION  

The much anticipated 1^st International Conference on Sex and Love Addiction—Global Advances in Clinical Treatment will be held April 4–6 in Brooklyn, New York. The conference offers up to 18 hours for continuing education. Continuing Medical Education credits will be provided by the American Medical Society of Addiction Medicine. Conference keynote speakers include Daniel Amen, MD; Claudia Black, PhD; Mark Gold, MD; Helen Fisher, PhD; and Rob Weiss, LCSW. A conference highlight will be an international panel discussion with leading practitioners and researchers from the UK, Canada, Russia and Slovenia who will share their perspectives and experiences from their respective countries. Differences in cultural issues as well as varying approaches to treatment will be explored offering a “global perspective”. Also featured will be Patrick Kennedy Lawford, United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for Drug Dependence, Treatment and Care. Our February 2013 issue of Counselor is themed “Sex Addiction—The Global Epidemic” and features several articles by leaders in this field.

ADOLESCENTS & YOUNG ADULTS  

Back to Las Vegas (April 11–13, 2013) for the 11^th National Conference on Adolescents and Young Adults. Nationally recognized speakers and authors will discuss a wide range of topics in a compelling array of keynote sessions and in-depth workshops. Topics will include: Understanding and Treating Trauma; Brain Science and Psychotherapy; Adolescent Sexuality Issues; The Bipolar Spectrum; Neurobiology of Depression and Anxiety; Eating Disorders, Psychopharmacology and Adolescent Clients;  Adolescent Entitlement; Bolstering Resilience; the 12 Steps and Adolescents, and much more. Keynote speakers include: Daniel Amen, MD;  Pat Love, EdD;  Donald Meichenbaum, PhD; Ralph Carson, PhD; Gabor Maté, MD; and Christine Stevens, MSW. The conference is proud to feature a presentation by Erin Merryn, MSW, author of Stolen Innocence and Living for Today;  Erin was named one of Glamour Magazine’s 2012 Women of the Year. She is the force behind Erin’s Law which seeks to end the silence and shame around sexual abuse.
