$1.2 Million Awarded to Fund Online Gambling Research

The Center for Gambling Studies at Rutgers University has been awarded funds to begin research on internet gambling in 2015.

Last year New Jersey became the third state to legalize online gambling, which prompted Governor Chris Christie to propose a mandate that examined its negative consequences (Salamon, 2014). In response, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) and the Department of Health and Human Services have awarded $1.2 million to begin research on internet gambling behaviors.

The study will begin in January 2015 with a sample of 1,500 New Jersey adults who will be interviewed by cell and landline phones and two thousand residents who will be interviewed online. After eighteen months researchers will conduct a follow-up survey to examine any changes in the prevalence of online gambling, problem gambling, and characteristics of online gamblers (Salamon, 2014). Yearly reports will be provided to Governor Christie.
