Ketamine: The Good, the Bad, and the Deadly

The opioid epidemic continues to dominate today’s headlines, mirroring past substance abuse trends with drugs such as cocaine in the 1980s, heroin in the 1990s, and methamphetamine thereafter. Currently, in the United States, the spotlight is on fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is up to 100 times more potent than morphine (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2023a). The grave impact of fentanyl on the opioid crisis is a major concern in the news cycle. However, in the fall of 2023, ketamine, a lesser-known drug, came under scrutiny following the death of actor Mathew Perry.
